International PhDs more time to find a UK job soon University of Manchester Careers Blog Amanda, our International careers guru, recently alerted me to a speech by the Home Secretary, Theresa May, in December which explicitly states : In future, all PhD students who have completed their studies will be allowed to stay here for longer to find skilled work or set up as an entrepreneur within the rules. From April, all such students will be allowed to stay in Britain for twelve months after they have completed their PhD before having to find a job or start a business. (From the Home Office website) We know that sometimes policy announcements, er, get a bit ahead of themselves (ie they change before the implementation date) but it does look quite positive. This suggests that after April, if youre an international PhD and you leave your job searching until after your viva (not that I recommend this!), youve still got some time to try and find yourself a job in the UK. We think it means, however, that you will still have to find an employer who will sponsor you for a Tier 2 visa if you do find work. Theres no hint that its a return to the old Post-Study Work Visa where you could do any job without being sponsored by a specific employer. More updates when we hear them. One of the biggest problems I see with peoples approach to using LinkedIn for job search is that many have unrealistic expectations for the online relationship and ask for too much too soon.Something strange seems to happen to some people when they network online. Its as if some people think that none of the common rules for building relationships exist. Could you imagine ever saying any of the following things over the phone or in person to someone you dont know?Ive seen you walking down this block in the neighborhood before. Want to meet for coffee?Someone told me we used to work for the same company that employs 20,000 people. Want to chat sometime?I found your number in the phone book. Maybe we have something in common.I heard through the grapevine that you work for a company where I would really like to work. Can you tell me more about what its like to work the re?I found you in the 1997 student alumni directory. Im a graduate of the class of 1980. Would you like to compare notes?I know Ive never actually met you before and you have no idea who I am. But someone suggested I say since you are someone I know and trust, I would like to add you to my network. Does that work for you? (Hint: thats verbatim from a LinkedIn template that people seem to use whether they know you or not).You looked like someone I should know so I followed you home, made note of your address and then did a search to find your phone number.
